About Andrew Cloud

Over 30 years of experience.

Self Portrait, 2014

Andrew Cloud is a self-taught realist painter whose creativity has morphed into different forms throughout the years. From his early beginnings crafting his distinctive personal style, he has perfected his art in painting, drawing, sculpture, and musical theatre costume design. Cloud enjoys exploring the unpromisingly queer beauty of the world through a quixotic lens and translating that into an emotional performance of his work.

A native of Houston, Texas, the artist has been a creative force in the community for over thirty years. Working in oil and ink for his paintings and pencil and ink for drawings, Cloud’s pieces have been used in several productions for the Houston Grand Opera and has had renderings displayed by Stages Repertory Theatre. He currently creates original pieces as well as desired repertoires for individual clients, infusing his personal aesthetic into each production.

Cloud’s portraits examine the minute details of the human face and body, ensuring that every expression, fine line, and soft curve tells its own story. Using bold, dark colors and harmonious compositions, each portrait is unique in expressing the emotion of the subject and the distinct world view of the artist. For many years, he has desired to “show the fucked up beauty of everyday life in each moment in time.”

In addition to his fine art, Cloud has excelled in costume design for Stages, Main Street Theatre, Infernal Bridegroom Productions, Catastrophic Theatre, HGO Studios, and Free Range Arts Foundation. His shows have included, “Xanadu,” “Grey Gardens,” and “ The Great American Trailer Park Musical.” He has also been a creative force in developing and executing stage milieu through reproductions of scenery, furnishings, and props for the Houston Grand Opera, Stages Repertory Theatre, and the Houston Ballet.
